Out of it

Google has produced a flashy Zeitgeist video about everything people search for in 2012.

My second reaction (after thinking how clever of them to claim all of popular history for the years as somehow theirs) was “Who are these people and what is going on in the world?”

i read a lot online. i watch the headlines everyday.  i like to consider myself fairly on top of things.  But i dont watch TV.  The commune bans it and i have not really had much of a relationship with it since i was a kid.  So when i went further into the top google lists for 2012, i realized how tremendously out of it i was.  These are the most searched terms for the year:

  1. Whitney Houston
  2. Gangnam Style
  3. Hurricane Sandy
  4. iPad 3
  5. Diablo 3
  6. Kate Middleton
  7. Olympics 2012
  8. Amanda Todd
  9. Michael Clarke Duncan
  10. BBB12

I did not really know about half of these (Gangnam, Diablo 3, Duncan and BBB12).  The only reason i knew about Amanda Todd was the Anonymous/Hunter Moore post i did.  But it gets worse.  This is the list under images (which is the second most popular search):

  1. One Direction
  2. Selena Gomez
  3. iPhone 5
  4. Megan Fox
  5. Rihanna
  6. Justin Bieber
  7. Harry Styles
  8. Minecraft
  9. Nicki Minaj
  10. Katy Perry

i know almost nothing about half (One Direction, Gomez, Styles, Minecraft, and Manaj) and only minimally know about Bieber, Perry and Rihanna.  So the top two image searches in the world, i have not even heard of.

justin-bieber

Who is this guy?

When i give tours of the commune, i try to stress some of the disadvantages of living this life style.  If these things are important to you, you probably dont want to live where i live.
